PM Cameron moves into Downing Street

LONDON: British Prime Minister David Cameron moved into his official residence on Downing Street on Thursday, exactly three weeks after the election that won him power as head of a coalition government.

Removal men loaded the belongings of Cameron, his pregnant wife Samantha and their two children into a van outside their home in the smart west London district of Notting Hill.

The Camerons will live in the second floor flat of Number 10 Downing Street, the historic offices of the British prime minister, while work is carried out at Number 11 which, because it is bigger, will eventually be their home.

"We are moving in today. So we had the last breakfast at home this morning but I have got quite a lot of other meetings and things I've got to do at the same time," Cameron told BBC radio.

Asked if he would be selling his Notting Hill home, the premier joked: "I certainly won't be renting it to Miss Whiplash if that's what you mean."

Miss Whiplash was the professional name used by a sex therapist who rented a flat belonging to former finance minister Norman Lamont, for whom Cameron worked as an advisor in the early 1990s. AFP
