Edward Snowden, the contractor who leaked details of mass surveillance programmes by the US National Security Agency, has left Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport after spending nearly six weeks holed up on the site.
Mr Snowden left the transit zone and entered Russian territory, according to the airport and to WikiLeaks, the whistleblowing organisation.
Anatoly Kucherena, his Russian lawyer, told local newswire Interfax the whisteblower had been granted temporary asylum of one year in Russia and had already left the territory of Sheremetyevo for an undisclosed location.
“I cannot say where he is because of safety reasons. Today he is one of the most wanted men in the world,” Mr Kucherena said.
“He went to a safe location. For him the issue of safety is very important.”
