Verdasco in final
Fifth-seeded Fernando Verdasco surged into the final of the Barcelona Open with a 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-1 semifinal win over Spanish compatriot David Ferrer on Saturday.
Having dropped the first set, Verdasco hung tight to squeeze out the second before cruising through in the decider to finish strongly.
On Friday, second-seed Robin Soderling cruised into semifinals beating Eduardo Schwank 6-2, 6-3 to set up a meeting with Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands, who upset third-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 — his first career win over a top-10 player.
Soderling broke Schwank in his first service game and never looked threatened from there, using his powerful serve to wrap up the win in 68 minutes.
