Federer moves up; Devvarman falls

TORONTO: Roger Federer overcame early niggles to beat Juan Ignacio Chela 7-6(7), 6-3 to reach the third round of the Toronto Masters on Tuesday.

In first-round matches, David Nalbandian, the winner at Washington last week, upset Spanish tenth seed David Ferrer 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

Somdev Devvarman made the main draw as a lucky loser following the withdrawal of Fernando Gonzalez, but crashed out in the first round losing 7-6(3), 6-3 to Gael Monfils.

Meanwhile, at the Cincinnati Women's Open, Maria Sharapova delivered a dominant third set to beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 on Tuesday in the first round.
