DOHA: Kim Clijsters of Belgium won the WTA Championships final, beating World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 here on Sunday.

Clijsters, 27, showed enormous mental strength over the past two days, winning Saturday's semifinal despite being involved in a car crash on the way to the venue. And she showed no sign of any after-affects as she powered her way to take her third career title at the season-ender on her second match point.

Wozniacki had been bidding to avenge herself against Clijsters who beat her in the semifinals en route to a successful defence of the U.S. Open title seven weeks ago. This was World No. 4 Clijsters' first tournament since their New York meeting, following a foot operation.

Clijsters won her fifth WTA title of the year, following triumphs in Brisbane, Miami, Cincinnati and the U.S. Open.

Monfils triumphs

France's Gael Monfils won his third career title on Sunday, beating Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 in the final of the Montpellier ATP tournament.

It was third time lucky for the World No. 15 who was beaten twice in the finals this year in Stuttgart and Tokyo.

At St. Petersburg, Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi missed out on capturing their second ATP title of the season after losing a fiercely-fought final to Daniele Bracciali and Starace Potito 6-7(6), 6-7 (5) in one hour and 36 minutes at the St. Petersburg Open.

The duo though earned 150 ATP ranking points each which will help them stay in contention for a place in the season-ending and prestigious World Tour finals.

They are now seventh in the top-ranked teams in the world and need to remain in the top-eight to qualify.
