Nadal and Wozniacki get top billing

London: Defending champion Rafael Nadal and women's world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki were named top seeds for next week's The Championships at Wimbledon here on Wednesday

Tournament officials mirrored the current world rankings for their top five seeds in the men's and women's singles, with Nadal ahead of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Sweden's Robin Soderling.

In the women's draw, Wozniacki heads the list from world No. 3 Vera Zvonareva, newly crowned French Open champion Li Na from China and Victoria Azarenka from Belarus.

Clijsters pulls out

The seeding list was altered on Wednesday following the withdrawal of Belgian world No.2 Kim Clijsters, who had initially been seeded two. Clijsters pulled out after suffering a recurrence of an old ankle injury on Tuesday.

Defending women's champion Serena Williams, who made her comeback at Eastbourne this week, has been seeded seventh. The position will allow her to avoid playing the highest-ranked players until at least the quarterfinals.

Serena won her 13th Grand Slam title last year at the All England Club, but then stepped on broken glass, eventually leading to blood clots on her lungs, and was out of action for nearly a year.

Federer out of top two

Federer and Nadal have combined for the past eight titles at the All England Club. For Federer, it's the first time he's been outside the top two seedings at Wimbledon since 2003, the year he won the first of five straight titles at the grass-court Grand Slam.

Paes-Bhupathi

seeded third

In men's doubles, the Indian duo of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi has been seeded third, while Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, who won at Halle last week, are seeded fourth.

Meanwhile, India's Sania Mirza and her Russian partner Elena Vesnina, who finished runner-up in the French Open, have been seeded fourth in women's doubles.

Wimbledon starts on Monday and the draw is on Friday.
